China’s Timeless Symbol of Rich Culture and Conservation
By Akanni Olasunkanmi Olajide, Nigeria
China, a land steeped in rich history, diverse landscapes, and a tapestry of cultures, offers a breathtaking blend of tradition and modernity. This vast country is celebrated for its mouthwatering cuisine, the iconic giant panda, vibrant cities like Chengdu, impressive biodiversity, unwavering commitment to security, warm-hearted people who refuse gratification for their help, a deep love and respect for children, a myriad of tea varieties, and a devotion to exercise. Let's embark on a journey to explore these facets of China's remarkable tapestry
Today, we stand before you with hearts full of gratitude, humility, and inspiration as we reflect on our recent sojourn—a truly transformative experience, rich with cultural enrichment and profound insights. The National Academy of Forestry and Grassland Administration, in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, has offered us the incredible opportunity to embark on a three-week journey of enlightenment and collaboration in the realms of Import and Export Management and the Protection of Endangered Species for Developing Countries.
Our story, punctuated with shared wisdom and unified aspirations, exemplifies the power of global collaboration. A diverse tapestry of nations converged to collectively advance knowledge and understanding, transcending borders and uniting in a common pursuit of progress. We are profoundly honored to have been a part of this global alliance, each nation contributing to the tapestry of unified perspectives and experiences that defined our time together.
At the heart of this monumental seminar were the invaluable insights and knowledge shared by renowned scholars, whose dedication and expertise enriched our minds throughout three intense and enlightening weeks. Their lectures and thought-provoking revelations left an indelible mark on our intellectual journey, instilling in us a deeper understanding of our responsibilities as stewards of our environment. The cross-cultural reservoir of knowledge formed through shared experiences with delegates from participant countries will undoubtedly reverberate within our nations' developmental pursuits.
Our journey extended beyond the confines of seminar rooms and touched upon the heart of China's rich cultural and ecological heritage. Our voyage from Beijing to Chengdu opened the doors to an immersive exploration of history, artistry, and ecological conservation. Visiting the marvel that is the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy and Irrigation Project showcased the remarkable synergy between human ingenuity and nature's bounties. The Baihetan National Wetland unraveled not only the beauty of serene landscapes but also the timeless stories etched within its folds. The Bamboo Museum's intricate weaving techniques exemplified the fusion of tradition and creativity, while the Leshan Giant Buddha left an indelible impression on our hearts. The boat cruise along the mesmerizing Meishan Dongpo Lake, complete with dancing waters, and the enchanting Panda market unveiled layers of culture that bound us to China's unique heritage.
China takes its commitment to security seriously. Visitors often comment on the sense of safety they experience when exploring the country. Stringent security measures ensure that people can go about their daily lives with peace of mind. The friendliness of the Chinese people is one of the most gratifying parts of visiting China. Chinese hospitality is renowned, with residents frequently going out of their way to assist guests while refusing any kind of recompense. This custom is strongly embedded in the culture, making visitors feel welcomed and valued.
However, my story would be incomplete without paying homage to the delightful Chinese cuisine that tantalized our palates. The shared meals, resonating with laughter and camaraderie, symbolized not only the joy of feasting but also the bonds forged over sumptuous dishes. Equally unforgettable were the moments of respite in exquisite hotels, where we rested and rejuvenated amidst luxurious comfort.
My heartfelt accolades extend to the exceptional staff at NAFGA who orchestrated every detail of this expedition with meticulous care. The unwavering dedication of the young and amiable Ylva, the ever-smiling Young, the caring mother Li, the helpful James, the intelligent orator Alex, Derrick, the fatherly Mr. Bian, and our amiable, calm, and loving driver, along with the skilled cooks and canteen staff, were instrumental in seamlessly weaving our steps into cherished memories. Your expertise and guidance were invaluable, and your unwavering commitment ensured our journey was nothing short of extraordinary.
In the spirit of unity, collaboration, and shared progress, we stand here today as living testaments to the power of global cooperation. Let us carry forward the insights, friendships, and profound understanding cultivated during this seminar into the heart of our respective nations. Our individual and collective journeys have been enriched, and our commitment to development, conservation, and international cooperation has been invigorated.
The journey we embarked upon has sown the seeds of transformation, and the bonds we've forged will undoubtedly ripple far beyond the confines of this seminar. In this era of global challenges and shared responsibilities, let us remember that together, we can achieve remarkable feats. We look forward to nurturing the seeds of change we've planted together, ensuring that the impact of this extraordinary seminar continues to flourish and inspire.

Evaluation of seminar on Forestry Addressing Climate Change and Sustainable Development for the Belt and Road Initiative Countries
CHINA - New Knowledge, New Dimension, New Inspiration, New Love
I am from the Czech Republic, and I used to work as a manager in the fields of nature conservation, forestry, ecology, science, and research. Currently , I am involved in the tourism industry, destination management and hospitality. As the coordinator of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the director of the largest national park in the Czech Republic I have had the opportunity to visit protected areas in Europe, Scandinavia, the UK, Scotland, and even the USA. It could be said that I have gained significant experience in these areas. However, until recently, I hadn't paid much attention to China, except as a consumer of various products, an admirer of modern technology, and with the knowledge that somewhere 12,000 kilometers far away from my home, there is also beautiful nature.
In September 2023, I had the chance to participate in a three-week international event in China focused on Chinese forestry, nature conservation, and their relation to climate change. The event was organized by the National Academy Forestry and Grassland Administration (NAFGA) in Beijing. I celebrated my 51st birthday with a visit to the Great Wall of China, and it's not an exaggeration to say that getting to know China has changed my perspective on the world. I am sincerely grateful for that.
Together with 40 other experts from 11 countries, I spent three unforgettable working weeks in the area between Beijing and Xi'an. Besides a series of fascinating and inspiring lectures and meetings led by NAFGA experts, we had the opportunity to explore Chinese forestry practices in the field. Prior to my visit to China, I had limited knowledge about Chinese forestry or nature conservation. All that ran through my mind was the historical massive deforestation in China, the decline of their natural forests, issues related to land desertification, or China's logging in Siberia. In essence, nothing particularly positive. I must admit that I traveled to the world's largest CO2 emitter with numerous negative preconceptions. However, what I saw, heard, and experienced in China exceeded all my positive expectations. I spent three weeks in silent wonder, and even now, two weeks after returning home, I am still trying to process the shock I experienced in China.
Since then, I have read more than a hundred scientific papers about Chinese nature, genetic resources, forests, and wildlife. I follow offers of travel agencies, read Chinese national laws on official government websites, study strategies, and traffic regulations in big cities. I am researching the new system of national parks in China, which greatly interests me. I have purchased a book on Chinese history and started meeting Chinese residents living in the Czech Republic. I use chopsticks, drink Chinese tea at home. I exchange messages with Chinese and African friends I met during my visit on daily basis. I learn about the Chinese language and script, and have begun publishing a series of specialized articles on Chinese nature and forestry in the Czech Republic. I am doing things I have never done before. My family thinks I've gone mad. Perhaps I have. I have fallen in love with China.
To summarize my experience, let me begin with the organization and the people from NAFGA. Our entire program was perfectly prepared and planned. All activities seamlessly connected, and the duration and scope of the course were appropriate. I especially appreciate the professionalism of the organizers and our main guides, Mr. Zhang Xiang ( 张翔 ) and Mr. Bian Mingming ( 边明明 ). I would even like to mention the cuisine, a minor detail. As a European, and particularly as a Czech with somewhat peculiar eating habits, Chinese cuisine was a delightful revelation for me. Without any conscious effort, I lost 5 kilograms during my stay. I am a sportsman and a highly active person. Most days, I ran 4-10 kilometers before breakfast. Thanks to Chinese cuisine, I had an incredible amount of energy. I slept only 4 hours a day, and it was sufficient. The rest of the day, I read, studied, ran, and walked. I walked almost 200 kilometers in Beijing and around 50 kilometers in Xi'an. I walked day and night whenever our education schedule allowed. I closely observed the lives of the local people, played street games with them, exercised with ladies to music late into the evening, visited parks and cultural sites, and engaged in discussions with students. I was deeply impressed by the pride of young students in being Chinese and living in China. Such a sense of national identity is fading among the younger generation in our country. I am a photographer, and I brought back nearly 10,000 photographs from China. I did my best to enjoy of every minute in China, not knowing if I would ever have the chance to return.
The historical and cultural richness of the country and the pristine cleanliness of cities like Beijing and Xi'an captivated me. I experienced something incomparable to my homeland. I am a conservative at heart, and I love my country. I live in harmony with nature in a log home. In China, I discovered the pervasive slogan of "harmonious coexistence of humans and nature." These are values I have lived by my entire life, influencing the Czech public and raising my children with the same values. In China, this is now a national motto. I read the entire publication "The Governance of China" by President Xi Jinping during my nights in China. And I consider his leadership to be strong and inspirational. I believe in his promotion of "harmonious coexistence of humans and nature," and I hope to see it translated into tangible results in the near future. Due to excursions of our seminar we were able to directly confront the theoretical knowledge from NAFGA's lectures in the real terrain. I was intrigued by the system of state and collective ownership of forest farms, a symbiosis of state investment and the private sector that benefits both parties. For the first time in my life, I saw a pepper farm and tasted fresh pepper straight from the tree. I was also fascinated by the jujube farm, a fruit I had never encountered in my country. I will never forget the Qinling National Botanical Garden. I admire China's reforestation efforts and its battle against land desertification. The story of the Saihanba National Forest Farm left a lasting impression on me. The results of afforestation, raising forest cover from 12% to 23% over the past 50 years, are truly astounding. China's ambitious goals in reducing emissions and aiming for carbon neutrality by 2060, considering its historical reliance on fossil fuels, are astonishing.
In conclusion, my only wish is to return to China. It is a fascinating country filled with incredible, hardworking, and humble people, unique traditions and culture, and beautiful women. I want to return to a country from which all of Europe should learn humility and industriousness. And if my wish doesn't come true, I hope to be born in China in my next life, so I can experience its history, culture, traditions, nature, ordinary and extraordinary people, and have the chance to love its beautiful women.

Initially, I couldn't even dream of setting foot on Chinese soil. However, now I am here, and I have been captivated by the enchantment of China, carrying this beautiful country in my heart. Among the many details that left a profound impact on me, the hospitality of the Chinese people was one of the most striking. I had knowledge about China's rich and diverse cuisine, but I was concerned about finding options that matched my personal food preferences. However, these concerns quickly turned into amazement. From the moment I set foot at the airport, the friendly staff inquired about my food preferences and conveyed this information to the relevant department, which was a reflection of their hospitality.
Throughout the seminar, we didn't encounter any issues with food. Everyone could find delicious options that suited their taste. Every detail of the organization seemed to be meticulously thought out. Precautions were taken, and every need was met. Such a thoughtful approach and attention to detail deeply impressed me. The unforgettable time I spent in China felt like a dream come true. Now, I am trying to express this beautiful experience with my words.
The visiting educators and administrators were not just guides who shed light with their knowledge but also great teachers who won our hearts with their grace and kindness. Their kindness and elegance in our interactions were not just about transferring knowledge but left a profound impact on a person's soul. They not only patiently answered our questions but also did their best to illuminate the unknown.
The content of the education went beyond what I had expected; its richness and impact were extraordinary. However, it didn't stop there. Our technical excursions to Xi'an and other locations were the vital parts of the education. The balance that combined theory with practice was truly captivating.
During the technical excursion, we witnessed a magnificent train journey and field experience with a large team, all of which went smoothly and pleasantly. I felt as if I had nestled in the warm embrace of organic farming, as visiting organic farming enterprises, especially the chili pepper processing facility, filled me with great happiness. Thanks to these experiences, we had the privilege of witnessing the fascinating journey of China's agriculture and agricultural products from the soil to the table.
Theoretical and technical training, when I set foot on Chinese soil, did not only equip me with knowledge and skills but also provided an opportunity to explore the most famous tourist destinations of this mystical country. The Great Wall of China was a magnificent convergence of history and nature. Some sections were surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas and untouched natural beauty. Walking alongside these enchanted walls steeped in history was an experience that seemed to make time stand still.
I immediately realized that the Great Wall of China was not an ordinary wall. Walking or climbing it was an opportunity to feel the grandeur and impressiveness of a historical monument more deeply. Each step was a tribute to the determination and dedication of those who once built this structure. The historical weight carried by the Great Wall of China nourished my soul amidst those magnificent landscapes.
Beyond being a symbol of Chinese culture, the Great Wall of China became a living memory of a historical treasure for me. Seeing the existence of this magical structure with my own eyes and climbing it felt like being inside a dream. As I ascended the stairs, I was once again in awe of the extraordinary diligence of the Chinese people. How was it possible centuries ago to construct this enchanting edifice? This question echoed in my mind.
In conclusion, the Great Wall of China was not just a tourist attraction, but also a tribute to the extraordinary achievements of humanity. This unique experience was a journey where the enchantment of history and the elegance of nature intertwined. The Great Wall of China is not only an unforgettable memory for me but also a great treasure in the history of humanity.
In the depths of Chinese culture, forests have played a significant role for centuries. As I roamed through the forests we visited during this seminar, I felt the depth of this historical connection and the relationship between nature and humanity. Particularly, the words of the country's leader reflecting a strong commitment to nature and environmental conservation, proudly displayed at every corner, deeply impressed me.
Exploring how the forests in China intertwine with history and culture during the trip was enchanting. These natural wonders in China reflected the historical and cultural richness rising above a unique geography. The mountains, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls in China deepened my love for nature, and these magnificent landscapes will remain among my unforgettable memories. The magic of nature continued to captivate me on this journey in China.
As a nature enthusiast who cherishes greenery, the opportunity to see China's most famous and enchanting forests within the scope of the seminar filled me with great joy. Walking among these mystical forests, stepping amidst the songs of different birds and the serene music of magnificent waterfalls, immersing myself in the pure embrace of nature, escaping the hustle of city life, and finding solace in the tranquility of nature was a source of genuine peace.
The melodic songs of birds seemed to reflect the joy within nature itself. I felt the unique beauty of Chinese forests, and without this seminar, I would never have had the chance to visit some of the most captivating forests in the world. Visiting the world's largest botanical garden made my heart race from the moment I stepped in because that place truly enchanted me.
The strong efforts made by all the leaders and people of China, including the President, to preserve nature, their respect for trees, nature, and plants, are part of a globally exemplary attitude. This dedication and commitment reflect their deep love for nature and set an example for other countries.
Our next destination after Beijing, Xi'an, which is the starting point of the historic Silk Road, was truly a fantastic experience for me. This magnificent city, where the historical texture blends with modernity, was fascinating with its rich and colorful history while still offering a modern atmosphere. While exploring, witnessing the preservation of historical structures up to the present day and following the traces of the past enchanted me.
As someone who burns with a passion for pandas, seeing pandas live filled me with an indescribable excitement, turning an unimaginable longing into reality. While strolling through the garden of the 'Qinling Giant Panda Research Center,' I found myself counting the minutes to see the pandas, and as the moment of the unexpected encounter approached, my excitement soared even higher.
On this journey, gaining more knowledge about pandas and observing their unique lifestyles was an educational experience that deepened my interest in nature and biology. Seeing the world's most adorable, peaceful, and symbol of friendship, the pandas, and visiting them will remain an unforgettable memory throughout my life. This special encounter, this memory of spending time with pandas, one of the most elegant and adorable creatures in nature, will be one of the most precious memories in my heart.
Seeing the Terracotta Warriors, the result of 30 years of labor, and witnessing the distinct expressions on their faces deeply excited me. These magnificent works of art were like gates that harbored the secrets of the past and allowed us to travel through time. Xi'an, while seamlessly presenting the mysteries of history within the modern world, this experience was truly the beginning of an unforgettable adventure for me.
Wandering through the modern streets of Xi'an and simultaneously seeing young girls proudly wearing traditional Chinese clothing and traditional makeup that reflects their cultural values was enchanting. In a world where modernization is advancing rapidly, the desire of these young people to keep their cultural heritage alive and showcase their traditions on the streets was truly impressive. Being among the people who live and preserve this cultural heritage was a great pleasure for me.
Exploring the city of Xi'an, where the past and the modern future merge splendidly, as I walked through its streets, holds an important place among the enchanting memories I have experienced. Seeing the Yellow River was an unforgettable experience for me; this great river opened a window to China's history and natural beauty.
Watching the spectacular performances of traditional dances, music, and visuals in Xi'an was enchanting and truly unforgettable. This city not only keeps its cultural riches alive but also offers visitors a historical and artistic feast. Being mesmerized by the passion and artistry of the people who share these memories was just one of the many memories I had in Xi'an.
I witnessed the preparation and presentation of the tea ritual, a magical part of China's deep traditions, with my own eyes during the technical tour. In fact, I had the privilege of learning the traditional brewing technique of green tea under the guidance of a real tea master. This moment and experience were not only beautiful but also an unforgettable treasure for me.
Tasting Peking duck and other regional delicacies from the globally renowned Chinese cuisine in their place of origin was a unique experience for me. The flavors and presentations of these authentic dishes created unforgettable memories on my palate. This delicious journey provided a magical opportunity to explore the richness and diversity of Chinese cuisine, further deepening my interest in gastronomy.
One of the unique aspects of this seminar was NAFGA's presentations from participating countries about the work they are conducting in their own nations. The opportunity to acquire knowledge about multiple countries simultaneously and gain experience in giving presentations abroad turned into a privilege. This part generated great excitement among the participants and allowed them to access rich information from different perspectives.
The politeness, hospitality, and helpfulness of all the staff working in NAFGA's departments with whom we communicated had a profound impact on adapting to China and making us feel at home. Simultaneously, the excellent harmony with other participants ensured that the seminar was a productive and enjoyable experience. This atmosphere of mutual respect and collaboration allowed the seminar to achieve its objectives and enabled participants to learn from each other.
The seminar concluded with a magnificent certificate ceremony.
The seminar's organization was meticulously planned, considering every detail to ensure a flawless experience for the participants. Even providing an allowance for shopping was taken into account. This was one of the most exceptional seminars I have ever attended. Beyond being an educational seminar, it provided an experience that made significant contributions to both my personal development and professional skills.
Every moment of this seminar was memorable and precious. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Turkish Consulate General in China, the Chinese government, the leaders of all institutions and organizations that contributed to the organization in China, NAFGA's executives, and all the staff. I hope I have been able to convey the profound impact and value of this outstanding seminar. I am grateful for the opportunity to have this experience, and I will carry the imprints it left on me forever.
